Getting started
You can create a free account at any time on the sign-up page. You enter your email address and a password and then receive a confirmation email. As soon as you have clicked the link in it, you can get started. Or just sign in with your Google or Apple account.
Yes, everything is completely free. There is no trial period and no subscription, and you do not need a credit card. Uploading audio files, reading along, saving words and practising will always stay free.
You can upload audio files as MP3, WAV or AAC, each up to 2 GB. You do not need to bring subtitles, because you can create them right in the app. If you already have some, just upload them as well.
There are two limits, and they are independent of each other. You have 5 GB of storage in total for your uploads, and each month you can have 12 hours of audio transcribed. Storage becomes free again as soon as you delete an audio file, and the transcription allowance starts again every month.
After logging in, you will find “Upload” in the audio library. There you choose an audio file in German, give it a title and start the upload. As soon as the file is there, you let the app create the subtitles or upload your own.
Features
You have your audio file transcribed in the app, which gives every sentence its timestamp. Uploading your own subtitles works just as well. While the audio file plays, the sentence being spoken is highlighted and the text scrolls along. A machine does the transcription, and now and then it gets a word wrong.
You click a word in the subtitles and get its translation. When you save the word, the sentence it appears in is saved along with it. Later on, that sentence helps you learn more than the translation alone would.
Your recording is transcribed and compared word for word with the sentence from the subtitles. Words that were understood differently from what was expected are marked in colour, so you can see at a glance where it is worth trying again.
Yes, you can download your list as a CSV or Excel file at any time from the word list page, for example for a flashcard app.
Yes, in the player you can set the speed anywhere between 0.5× and 2×, so you can slow down when someone speaks too fast and speed up when you already know the text well.
Technical
A single file can be up to 2 GB. In total, you have 5 GB of storage for all your uploads and 12 hours of transcription per month.
Yes, the app has to hear you somehow, after all. The built-in microphone of your laptop is perfectly good enough. With a headset the results are often a little more accurate, because less of the room’s echo is recorded.
No, you need an internet connection to learn, because translation and speech recognition run on a server.
WieGesagt is tested in the current versions of Chrome and Firefox. Everything should work just as well in other browsers, and if you do notice something, write a short message through the contact form and it will be looked into.
There is no separate app. WieGesagt runs in the browser, on a computer just as well as on a phone, with nothing to install.
Privacy and security
All connections between your browser and the server are encrypted, and the files you upload are kept in protected storage. You will find the details in the privacy policy.
No, they are not stored permanently. Your recording is sent to a speech recognition service, transcribed there and then discarded. The privacy policy describes exactly what happens along the way.
Yes, you can do that in the account settings. After you confirm that you are sure, your audio files, saved words, progress and settings are deleted completely. Take your time to think it over first, because this cannot be undone.
Only you can. Your audio files are private. They cannot be shared, and no other user can find them.
The word you click and the sentence it appears in are sent to a translation service, so that the translation fits the context. The privacy policy describes what happens to your data there.
Yes, it is. You can export or delete your data directly in your account at any time, without having to send a request. If you would like to request access to your data under Art. 15 GDPR, just write to [email protected].
